Jeffrey Archer will be the guest speaker at a black-tie dinner to be held on Thursday 26^th April, entitled “Up close and personal with Jeffrey Archer: a private encounter with the man, his books and his life”, organised by the IoM Sporting and Dining Club and sponsored by HSBC.

Jeffrey Archer has sold over 270 million copies of his books in 97 countries and is the only author ever to have been a number one bestseller in fiction, short stories and non-fiction. His next novel, ‘The Sins of the Father’, is volume two of a five book saga called ‘The Clifton Chronicles’ and is due to be published in March this year.

Having gained a Blue in Athletics at Oxford, Jeffrey served five years in the House of Commons and nineteen in the House of Lords. He acted as Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party from September 1985 until November 1986 and was made a Life Peer in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 1992. In 1999, he was charged with perjury and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment, being released in July 2003, having served two years. An avid art collector and amateur auctioneer, Jeffrey has been married for 46 years to Dr Mary Archer, who is chairman of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

A charity raffle will yet again be held during the dinner, with all funds raised being donated to a local charity selected by HSBC. At the last dinner of 2011, at which the guest speaker was Michelle Mone, £920 was raised for the Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (IOM).

The UKBI Inspire accreditation process involved a review of business incubator policies, procedures and the team providing support to early stage companies.  The review involved benchmarking these areas against best practice and included a visit to the Island by a UKBI assessment team in October.

The Isle of Man Business Incubator was originally established in 2008 and managed by Coventry University Enterprises.  In 2010, the Department of Economic Development established a public-private sector partnership with the intention of enhancing support for local start-ups and also businesses looking to relocate to the Island.  A key target of the new partnership was to obtain UKBI accreditation by March 2012.

Kate Lord-Brennan of Isle of Man Business Incubator was delighted that accreditation had been achieved earlier than planned.  “This is major milestone and I am pleased with the feedback we received from the UKBI review team.  The review process was very constructive and we obtained a lot of advice which will help us to continue developing.”

Keiron Broadbent of UKBI commented “The Isle of Man Business Incubator has done very well achieving accreditation and we would not expect to see a similar aged programme to be as developed in so many areas”.

The event at the Isle of Man Business Centre also marked Global Business Incubation Day.  This provided an opportunity for entrepreneurs currently developing their business ideas to network with those running successful local businesses.

Gladly I am wrong! A further look at the book shows it to be a wonderfully written book that clearly shows Marks passion for his subject and left me with the decision of what I am going to try and grow on my allotment next year. If a book can do this then it is defenitly worth adding to your collection.

The pages are glossy and well illustrated and very informative with both growing details and great recipes to use with the result of your efforts. If I can grow a fraction of what is offered in this book I will be very happy. Mark has succesfully written a book that is very different to most other books on the market in the fact that it is not vanilla and samey – advising you how to grow the same old things year after year.

This in my eyes is a great acheivment and I know I will get great satisfaction from this book over the coming years – now how many books is that true of?

The Manx Executive Challenge is held every two years and is widely regarded as the premier development opportunity for the future leaders of the Isle of Man. I am sure by now the author of this wonderfully simple cookbook  needs no introducing, when looking through this book and at some of the recipes it was a little bit overwhelming and my first impressions were that the recipes and techniques had been over simplified.  However once again the old cliche ‘don’t judge a book by it’s cover’ was definitely appropriate.

I attempted something quick and simple for the first recipe as I was going on holiday and madeclassic shortbread and the results were positively astounding! it was without doubt the nicest shortbread I have ever tasted, and 10 days later the uneaten shortbread was still crunchy and melted in the mouth.

Once back off holiday I attempted something more elaborate and a friends birthday was coming up so I attempted the Chocolate Spiral on P144, and whilst not looking as well finished as the one in the book it was deceptively easier than ‘first impressions’ and created that wow factor at the party.  Will post photo’s in seperate post.

Amongst a saturated market of baking books this one stands out and has definitely earned it’s place on my bookshelf.  It also highlights why Fiona Cairns was chosen to bake the royal wedding cake.

How many times have you handed spare change to a total stranger? Or donated something toward a cause thousands of miles away? We never know which of our small actions make an impact. But what if one small act can change a life? What if that person goes on to change another life?

Notes: Pestalozzi is an educational charity which takes students aged 16 to 19 from developing countries that are disadvantaged economically and politically to study the International Baccalaureate (IB) course at Hastings College for two years. The emphasis is on recruiting more girls who would otherwise be denied an education. With an IB students can apply for full scholarship at any university worldwide to do a degree relevant to the needs of their country including medicine, engineering and economics giving them the skills they need to return home and make a difference.

TT3D: Closer to the Edge is a film about the TT, the world-famous motorcycle race that takes place on the Isle of Man every year.
